Bureau of Indian Education Summer Institute was a dynamic conference that offered a range of workshops for educators, administration, technology support staff, school board members and instructional coaches. A delegation of Chief Leschi staff members attended. Our school was honored to have a student guest speaker present at the conference. Gabriella Tirado, a 2009 Chief Leschi graduate, spoke to a conference hall of more than 1,000 people and BIE officials. Her speech addressed her academic successes, future plans for college and the support that Chief Leschi provided. Operation Warrior package distribution
Operation Warrior is a program at the Chief Leschi High School/Middle School that supports those family members and friends of Chief Leschi staff and students that are in a military combat zone. The Leschi staff and students provide hard to get personal items that are then placed in a box and mailed to the combat soldier at their location in the combat zone. We also try to include a “Warrior” T-shirt and student letters. The Leschi school family has been an ardent supporter of the program and has provided a “local attachment” for these soldiers that are in a very difficult place. Read more...

Middle-school and high-school students at Chief Leschi have been enjoying after-school and weekend activities with the 21st Century Recreation Club this year, under the supervision of high school teacher, Sunny Anderson. 21st Century is a grant program based on the idea that six hours of education is not enough. Therefore, the program offers activities designed to link regular school- day academics with meaningful and enjoyable activities after school. Although these activities are designed with a link to academics in mind, any student with guardian approval is eligible to attend. Read more...

Last GREAT weekend escape for school year
The May weekend escape had so many students we had to take two buses. The sixth, seventh and eighth grades came up to enjoy themselves, have some fun and give our staff some experience running three camps at the same time. We had 44 students and 14 student counselors along with Chief Leschi staff members, giving us right around 60 people at camp. The sun was out all weekend, the water was warm and the kids really enjoyed swimming. Where else can kids swim, day-hike, night-hike, build a boat, play volleyball, basketball, football and catch fish? They also can watch the bald eagles and osprey take fish out of the water during the day. These are some of the things the kids did this weekend along with a boat-building competition. They were given four boards with holes in them, two floating barrels, some styrofoam and 50 feet of rope to make a boat. Once the boat was built, they raced to pick up a teammate on the floating dock. Read more...
Chief Leschi Middle School/High School took some time off on May 1 to celebrate the students’ hard work and dedication during WASL testing. The school rented an inflatable boxing ring, four of the arcade racing games, a human fly wall, and a bouncy basketball/tug of war inflatable toy for the students to cut loose with and have fun. Outside on the courts, a five-on-five fun tournament was scheduled, where even some of the staff got involved and showed their skills. With ping-pong tables, a Rock Band tournament on the big screen, and a movie in the band room, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The school also provided sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips and drinks for the students to snack on. Tanesha Cayou, a ninth-grader, stated, “I am really glad we did it. It was pretty fun.” From Chief Leschi staff, thank you to the students for all your hard work this year. Read more...
