Five Chief Leschi students; Wynonna Swift, Katarina Johnson, Leeann Martinez, Redmorning Eagle Peters, and Patricia Gonzalez-Montanez; have been accepted to attend the 2nd Annual Bureau of Indian Education Summer Youth Leadership Challenge at Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas, June 6 through 11, 2010. Students had to apply to be accepted, and the application process was rigorous. Students were asked to write two essays. One asked students to identify four major areas; economics, education, social programs, cultural activities, language program or other relevant topics that their tribe is involved in that positively influences their lives. The morning of May 18 was overcast and windy but an intrepid group of students and staff ventured onto research boat the Indigo for a day at sea. Superintendent Ray Lorton was a special guest and interacted with the students and shared some of his thoughts about growing up around salt water. After a short talk about safety the science group left the dock for a day of adventure. The weather immediately improved and the sun peaked out occasionally. The students were broken into three groups and rotated through three work stations. Boat crew members led two of the stations. The first station taught about what to do if someone falls overboard and knot tying was also covered. Some kids really struggled with ropes and knots. The second stop was riding with the Captain in the pilot house. Each student was allowed at least 10 minutes at the wheel to pilot the boat. Princess reflects on her time as daffodil royalty
Crystal Daniels, Chief Leschi’s 2010 Daffodil Princess, found her place amidst a sea of bright yellow flowers and smiling faces on parade day. On April 10, Crystal Daniels rode the Daffodil Princess float through four parades: Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. “The parade was by far the best part of my experience as a princess,” she says. Student led conferences successful
This year Quest advisory launched in the middle school and high school. Throughout the year students made annual goals, took assessments of their strengths and interests, and explored careers that interested them. Then they placed their annual goals, the results of these surveys and samples of their best academic works into their portfolios. Read more...
ClS State Mandated Testing in May
The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) has been replaced for students in grades three through eight by the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP). The MSP will be administered during the weeks of May 11 through May 28, 2011. Both the elementary school (three through six) and students in grades seven and eight will have specific testing dates and times. Testing schedules for each school will be sent home well before the actual start of testing. Read more...
New format for HSMS Spring Parent Conferences
This spring student conferences will have a new and exciting change at Chief Leschi Schools. Students in grades 7-11 will be leading the conferences themselves. Allowing students to take charge of the conference encourages them to be more accountable for what they are learning and makes learning a more active process. Read more...
