At the age of 7, Gladys Knight won the finals on the popular “Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour” TV show contest. The following year, she, her brother Merald, sister Brenda, and cousins William and Eleanor Guest formed a musical group called The Pips. R&B chart-topper, Ashanti, brings it to the EQC

R&B singer Ashanti Douglas was born in 1980 in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York, into a musical family. Her father used to sing and her mother is a dance instructor. Ashanti began singing in a gospel choir at the age of 6. As she grew, her musical talent developed. She danced in a show at Carnegie Hall and in the Disney television musical “Polly.” It was in high school that she honed her songwriting skills and harnessed her talent for creating a story that people could relate to, song after song. Hawaiian duo makes waves in Northwest

The Cecilio & Kapono story began under a starry night on Oahu’s North Shore in February 1973. While on a break from touring with Little Anthony and the Imperials, Cecilio Rodriguez flew to Hawaii to meet Henry Kapono, who had a very similar style to his own and with whom, it was thought, he could form a group.
