Lucy Dafoe, Principal, was recently selected as one of twelve panel members to serve on the NEA/NIEA Native High School Roundtable in Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the event was to bring together experts in education to participate in conversation about best practices for engaging Natives in High School in order to improve academic achievement and to identify resources, programs and strategies found to be effective in working with Native high school students.
Ms. Dafoe was chosen by the National Indian Education Association to participate on the panel based upon her nomination by Denny Hurtado/Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State. Principal Dafoe was nominated because of her many accomplishments in education and in the school improvement process at Chief Leschi Schools. Included in those accomplishments have been the implementation of Safe & Civil Schools programs, implementation of new (board approved) math and literacy curriculum, implementation of Navigation 101 with student-led conferences, improved student attendance and increased graduation rates for individual senior classes at CLS.
Principal Dafoe’s selection to serve on the NEA/NIEA Native High School Roundtable is not only an honor for her and our
school but also provides an opportunity to share information on the successful practices of Chief Leschi Schools at the national level.
