Electronic Medical Records

What are they and what are the benefits?

An Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a patient’s health record in a digital format. The records are stored in a database and retrieved using a computer.

What is included in Electronic Medical Record?

Data such as medicine list, allergies, medical history, x-rays, lab test results, billing records and patient contact information are found in electronic medical records.

What are the benefits of EMR?

The electronic medical record system has been beneficial for many organizations to provide efficient, co-ordinated, safe and high-quality care. There are many benefits to both the medical providers and the patients.

  • Efficiency: Multiple care providers can simultaneously view a patient’s medical record on their computers and get up-to-the-minute information on test results and other doctor’s recommendations. This collaboration helps providers work more efficiently in determining if further consultation or testing is required.
  • Another benefit of an EMR system is efficiency in scheduling appointments. With an electronic system, front desk staff can easily search for requested dates/times, find cancelled appointments and have the ability to use waiting lists for doctors.
  • Faster Care: At the very least, an existing electronic medical record can save time at the doctor’s office. At most, quick access to records can be lifesaving if an emergency occurs and answers to those questions needed during the emergency decision-making process.
  • Storage: EMR is an electronic database of information capable of carrying much more information than traditional paper systems. An EMR system can manage records from multiple offices as well as multiple types of records.
  • Security: An EMR system secures records with backup files in case of emergencies. Also, only authorized users may access them – with authorization tailored to the specific job function.
  • Patient photos can be added in an electronic medical record which protects patients from medical identity theft and misidentification of a patient.
  • Accessibility: Authorized individuals can access an electronic medical record online from any location. Some EMR systems allow patients to access their own medical information from a personal computer.

PTHA is currently in the beginning stages of moving towards an electronic medical record system. Community members are encouraged to attend one of two community forums where they can view a demonstration of what the patient can access from their own computer.
