About 100 people gathered at Puyallup Tribal Youth Center June 14 for a new event at the facility, Daddy and Me Day.
According to Lucia Earl-Mitchell, youth center coordinator, the event tied in with Father’s Day and was meant to celebrate the bond between children and their fathers and other family members.
“This is about honoring fathers, uncles and all the other male figures in kids’ lives,” she said.
A variety of fun activities took place, with prizes awarded in several categories. Robert Smith Satiacum, Sr. and his son took first place in the water balloon contest. For their effort they took home a $50 gift card and a slip-and-slide water toy.
Annie Carrillo took first place in the coloring contest. She won a super soaker and a $50 gift card.
Chris Lovejoy and his son Darien devoured the competition in the watermelon eating contest. They were rewarded with an 18-hole golf package.
Many of the fathers and children enjoyed the miniature golf course set up behind the center. Another popular attraction is the new waterslide toy that the center recently purchased. “The kids really like it,” Lucia Earl-Mitchell remarked.
Inside the center, food was served and T-shirts were given away to youth and adults.
All in all it was a fun afternoon. “It went really well,” Lucia Earl-Mitchell observed.
